We signed Kirk Cousins in mid-March. The Combine took place end of February. And prior to the Combine, we'd surely done a ton of due diligence on at least 25 guys who could possibly slot to #8, including Penix. Penix isn't some sudden revelation, or at least he shouldn't be.

So now we have a succession plan, but we could have spent the Cousins money in free agency or trades, and started the "future" now in 2024 with Penix if we believe he's worthy of a #8 pick.

I actually love Penix. I don't hate the pick, even at #8. But there is literally no explanation from the Falcons that holds water. The "future" explanation is actually the least credible of the bunch because he could have started now. The whole premise that Penix is only a future solution is absurd.

The NFL is a salary cap league, and one of the highest salaries on the team will be on the sidelines for at least the next two seasons.
