I’m not shocked that we won. We were playing at home, we can hit and defend, and I think in college baseball long weather delays really favor the home team… we didn’t have to sit around in our dugout last night during all of that. There really is no visiting team club house or locker room at Foley.

So I’m not shocked that we won. I am surprised how we won. That we took a shutout into the 9th inning… didn’t see that coming. And I sure didn’t expect all those zeros after the 1st inning.

It was tough to hit last night with that super heavy air. We capitalized on our chances, but our offense was quiet most of the game too. That was the difference though. We took advantage when we had chances and prevented tech from doing so (at least until the game was out of reach)

I thought Danny Hall stuck with their starter, Brown, way too long. I couldn’t believe it when they ran him out to start that last inning. He pretty clearly (to me anyway) didn’t have it and wasn’t comfortable. And to compound that, or perhaps to make it more pronounced, the next guy Vaughan was really good.

I do continue to think that LaPlante should be our SS and Murillo our 2b, but I really like both guys a lot, and I don’t say that to suggest Murillo can’t play SS. It’s just a very good combo. I really like where we are defensively and agree fully with Stricklin’s comment that we should be a strong defensive team, even if we haven’t shown that all the way.

You can bet that tech is going to come out with some fire today and I imagine more than 9 runs get scored this afternoon. But we ought to go into this thing with some confidence, more than they have.

Lastly, and certainly not least, that’s two really, really good outings from Jaden Woods. He just overmatched Princeton last weekend… so maybe you think that’s not a great barometer given the competition. He dominated tech’s lineup last night, and that’s obviously a different level of hitter. That Jacksonville State game is now the outlier. Lot to be said for Jaden and how he bounced back from that.
