Big boy basketball. BIG BOY BASKETBALL. When our beloved Hoop Dawgs shots aren't falling and you give it to other team 18 times in turnovers (it felt like more than that), how do you win? You absolutely D up and get some buckets at the rim and the free throw line. We accomplished all that and oh yeah, you also need to have the biggest, baddest dude on the court...Russel Tchewa.
1st half
Silas Demary show. He had 11 points and it's not just that, he is cancelling out other points on the other end. Animal. I know he needs to be subbed out at times, it just doesn't seem to make logical sense to do it. He goes out the last two minutes of the 1st half and it just felt like we lost all momentum. Kid is a big deal.
LSU only made 12 shots, but 7 of them were threes. That and our 10 first half turnovers kept them in it.
2nd half
Noah Thomasson had 7 points in a row for us at one point. RJ Melendez had an absolute Sportcenter hammer dunk. But we are getting down to business here in this space. At the media timeout at 4:20 left in the game, we are up 61-55. We score 7 points down the stretch to seal it. Who had all seven? That would be the big fella, Russ Tchewa. He was just so HUGE late. None bigger than the offense board with 5 seconds left and dribble and put back, and-1, to seal the game. We were down one and he just saved us. Take your bow, big guy, you carried us through the finish line.
Stats
Threes:
We were a putrid 5 for 17 (29.1%)
LSU was a smoking 10 for 23 (43.5%)
Turnover:
We coughed it up 18 times, but they gave it right back 16 times.
Free throws:
We got them here. Big deal!
UGA: 19-24
LSU: 12-14
Bonus: If you aren't focusing in on Demary's transition defense, you are missing an absolute masterpiece. Jabri had a rough turnover with 3:20 left in the game. LSU's electric guard, Jalen Cook, who had been working us good the whole game has Demary one-on-one on the break. The ol' freshman, as he does so often in these situations, just says no thank you. Beautifully contested shot without fouling. Cook misses and we get the board. There is no stat for plays like this but it is WINNING basketball.
One of the worst non-calls in basketball history when LSU's Jordan Wright shoved Thomasson to the floor to be able to get the ball to fire that last three that was in....and out. Man that was close. Ref HAS to blow the whistle. Ridiculous.
On Ice:
Well, that magical high from Rupp didn't last as long as Jabri would have liked. A rough 1 for 8 from three tonight. But he did manage to get us 6 boards and his length helped us on D. Need him to find that stroke again quick.
Huge, huge, huge W. 4-2 in conference and our two losses are to top 10 teams. GREAT position here. Florida is beatable Saturday, but they are talented. If we can get one there Saturday, we would be getting some SERIOUS attention. Tonight was a stepping stone game. With Big Russ's late game heroics, and his 11 points, 11 rebounds, we were able to take that step. Go you beautiful Hoop Dawgs!
