The game never really felt in doubt, but Mercer was pesky. They shot the ball well and were able to keep us fans watching until the end. Especially after we just saw our beloved Dawgs come back from 17 down two nights ago. The game had a scrimmage feel to it, although both teams played extremely hard.
The first half was where it was at. We shot 68% from the field and 71% percent from the three point line. With only five turnovers. That’s 🔥🔥🔥. Second half we had 9 turnovers andcooled off a bit from the field. The flow definitely slowed for us.
The story of the game was free throws. We made 30 of 42 free throws. Mercer made 5 of 10. That’s a 25 point differential in an 11 point final margin of victory. Huge.
We worked the ball inside and attacked the basket. Tchewa got a BUNCH of touches, which feels good for our offense. It would be extremely helpful if he could learn to hit the cutter with a pass. Deloach has an extreme advantage over Tchewa in passing ability. But Tchewa was tied for the lead in assists tonight, but he did just have two 😁.
Impressive stat:
Jabri and Melendez were a combined 14 of 15 from the foul line. They both shoot it really well from the stripe. This could be huge for us late in games.
Make it a double:
Both Demary and Melendez hit two 3’s tonight. Both have been shaky from downtown so that was good to see.
Stats that seem common but you don’t want to ever take for granted:
1. Demary with 13 points, 7 boards 😳.
2. Jabri with double figures with 13 points. This makes for 7 out of 8 games in double figure and the other game he had 9.
3. Melendez with a smooth 18 points, 4 boards. He did let that turnover number creep up to 3 tonight.
4. Justin Hill scoring 8 big points late to keep things peaceful. Big shots.
Favorite Plays:
1. Tchewa stealing the ball at the elbow, just by playing great on ball defense and being active with his hands. Crazy for a 7 footer to do that.
2. Jabri’s run down block on the fast break.
It’s on to Tech now on Tuesday night. Honestly, if we win that one, we are pretty much right where we hoped to be in the non-conference. Three wins over ACC schools would be just great. We would have a good chance at 10-3 in the non-conference schedule and I think any sane person would have signed up for that from the start in a quick minute. We have some flaws, and maybe it’s just because I’m a crazy diehard, but man I love that season is back and I look forward to seeing this team each game. Let’s whip Tech!!! Go Dawgs!!!
