Interesting topic to discuss here.
Pruitt is widely regarded as the best of the best when it comes to recruiting. But for what reason? Sure, he recruited great at Alabama, but who hasn't. Recruiting hasn't dropped off since he left there. Highly rated defensive backs are still flocking to the Capstone.
Then he leaves Alabama, heads to FSU and catches the end of a recruiting cycle. He signs Jalen Ramsey, but not much else in the way of defensive backs. He recruits for the coming year for FSU, but by the time he leaves for UGA, FSU has very little committed in terms of highly rated defensive backs.
So he comes to UGA, catches the tail end of a recruiting cycle again, and fills the UGA class with some lower rated guys that he takes flyers on. Fast forward to now, he's has an entire year to recruit, and he's landed Briscoe, Roundtree, and some lower rated guys from elsewhere that he's offered. He had McGraw in the fold, lost him to Alabama, and is working to get him back. He whiffed on highly rated guys he was initially in on (Jackson, McFadden, Minkah, Tolliver).
Now Pruitt may be a great evaluator of talent, but there's a reason that the teams winning championships have also more times than not been the teams that are recruiting at elites levels (top 3-4) according to most ranking services. There's some merit to the rankings along the way.
Just food for thought, maybe Pruitt isn't quite the recruiter everyone says. Don't get me wrong, definitely think he's bringing some much needed change to Athens, but he doesn't appear to be the recruiting savior everyone says. At least from a rankings perspective.
That being said, I think there's also a reason UGA has never closed well late $$$, whereas other teams like Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and FSU have $$$
