First, this post is about the subject, not solely people in the program today. Our QB situation since 2016 has been interesting to say the least.
While some people will try to tell us that things are no different here than that program 1 state over to the West, anyone who has watched college football the past 10 years knows that's not true.
Bama had open QB competitions in 2015 and 2016 as well as benching SEC Championship caliber QBs more recently both in game and week over week.
In all situations, a QB not initially QB1 or a benched QB1 responded with eventually earning QB1 and having solid success. Sounds like any other position where competition breeds excellence. Even with Hurts leaving he went on to be successful at OU before ultimately becoming an NFL starter.
Will UGA ever evolve from managing the QB position so delicately and pushing the competition into the public eye during games?
It seems like NFL QBs gravitate towards Tuscaloosa because at the end of the day those types believe in their abilities and know great play aligned with team goals will ultimately be rewarded.
Meanwhile, we've had several high profile QB recruits back off late and ultimately go to other programs. I know we don’t want to be in the business of promising QB1 to any recruit, but Bama has shown that's not required at all and healthy competition settled in games, not practice, can still be the most effective decision point as well as ultimate motivational tool for the players.
The NFL prospects line up to go there regardless of offensive coaching turnover because at the end of the day the best players will get their shot outside of pure overlap. It certainly appears that high profile QB talent trusts the process at Bama more than UGA.
