They are one of the deadliest natural disasters but the huge majority of human deaths occur as a result of infrastructure or building collapse.

Before modern civilization, when folks were living in small huts & tents, earthquakes were far less deadly. Most animals (wild & domestic) are unhurt by earthquakes unless they are in towns and stuck under a building collapse.

Just crazy to imagine one of the deadliest natural forces today probably wasn't that big of a deal before multi floor structures were built.
