2.) The contenders[/B]

Atlanta -- [/B]I have only passed through this large metropolitan area -- "the capital of the South"
-- but stores such as Criminal Records, Wax 'N' Facts, Moods Music, Wuxtry Records and Fantasy Land Records all appear to have very solid reputations. It's a city I'd like to check out sometime.

3.) Others putting up a strong fight

Ann Arbor, Mich. -- [/B]The university town of Ann Arbor, which is about 40 miles away from Detroit, might beat out the Motor City in terms of quality record shops. Standout stores include Encore Records, Wazoo Records and Underground Sounds.

Athens, Ga. -- [/B]This college town about 70 miles from Atlanta has one of the most iconic stores in the U.S. -- the Wuxtry Records where Peter Buck of R.E.M. used to work. Agora and Low Yo Yo Stuff are other record shops in town.

Best areas for records...full list here.

One in downtown Augusta called Psychotronic, has some neat..

albums and souvenir items. It's small, but has a pretty good selection of old albums and the prices are cheap. You can get lots of albums for $1-2.

There's quite a few here in Nashville and of course there are small...

companies here that still press vinyl. Jack White has been a big proponent in pushing the resurrection of vinyl because you get a warmer sound out of it over digital.

Kind of like the difference between tube amps and solid state amps.

Radioactive was best one in Augusta. Right downtown, had that bank vault...

for special records. I remember plopping down over $300 one day for big ole stack of records off my list back then. Stumbled upon store during business trip.

Kids are spoiled these days. I can't tell you how many hours I spent....

cleaning my records and recording them all to cassette tapes so I could listen to them in my car in 70s and 80s. Having to fiddle with all the inputs so the cassette recording had decent sound. I originally started with a handheld cassette recorder propping it up in front of the stereo cabinet before we got a full modular system my older brother put together.

Re: I recorded most of mine onto CD's

I pretty much live on you tube when I want to get into some tunes. I really appreciate folks taking the time to upload old albums and videos. I live in a small condo and my Harman Kardon computer speakers and sub put out an unbelievable sound with all the digitized classics. Gave my albums away back in the nineties and I sure do miss some of the more obscure classics... a few that come to mind... Les Dudek... Nektar...Triumvirat... I always loved the concept albums.

I frequented Wax N' Facts quite a bit back in the 80s.

I've always loved music. I kept all of my albums (400+), although they are stored (safely) in boxes, as is my old stereo system.

I used to frequent record shows that they'd have in the hotel meeting rooms and banquet rooms around town. It was always interesting to see the rare stuff on occasion.

I have a few rare/collectible records, some like the colored discs or something of that nature. I have one fairly unique Kiss 12" single that was only released in the UK. I bought it when stationed there, in 1982. It is double-grooved on one side, with two songs interwoven. The other side is blank and has the band's autographs etched into the vinyl.

I have some old picture disc releases, some colored disc releases, such as that.

This is the one I'm talking about
