....Went to watch this one....
couple of quick notes....Was interested in seeing Will Campbell for the first time and he didn't disappoint, sending a ringing double to left field to drive it two...
Drew Moody also impressive, allowing just two hits over five innings with five ks before freshman Zac Kristofak struck out the side in the 7th to end the game.
Below is the game story from sports info....I'll have much more myself after the third game on Sunday.
Drew Moody pitched five shutout innings and the Red team used a five-run outburst to post a 5-1 win in game one of the Fall World Series Thursday at Foley Field. Moody cruised through five innings, allowing just two hits and registering five strikeouts for the victory. After Moody, freshmen right-handers Tim Elliott and Zac Kristofak pitched one inning apiece in the seven-inning contest.
The Red squad went up 1-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly by freshman Cam Shepherd. The inning began with a base hit by sophomore Logan Moody off left-hander Ryan Avidano. Next, freshman Mason Meadows was hit by a pitch and freshman Tucker Bradley worked a walk. With the bases loaded, Shepherd got the scoring started and junior Will Campbell made it 3-0 with a two-run double to left that bounced over the wall. A couple of miscues led to a pair of runs to extend the lead to 5-0.
“I felt good, I had my fastball and change up working, and that’s all I needed today,” said Moody. “I was going to go four innings and because my pitch count was low, I was able to go five innings and five is always better than four so I was pleased with that.”
The Black team avoided a shutout with a run in the top of the sixth off Elliott. They loaded the bases on three walks and sophomore Adam Sasser’s two-out, infield single scored freshman James Williams. Then, Elliot retired freshman Austin Biggar to end the threat.
Freshman right-hander Christian Ryder started for the Black team and pitched two hitless innings with one walk. Senior right-hander Shaefer Shepard came on for Avidano during the five-run outburst and pitched the final 3.1 innings.
“Drew was really good, he’s a strike-thrower and everything he throws moves,” said Georgia’s Ike Cousins baseball coach Scott Stricklin. “He was down in the zone and was efficient in his pitch count. Christian went two good innings as a starter too. I was encouraged by the way all our young guys played.”
Freshman Zac Kristofak took care of the final frame for the Red team with three strikeouts. Freshman Riley King made the defensive highlight of the contest with a diving catch in right field to end the sixth inning.
“Zac competes and is fun to watch and root for,” Stricklin added. “That’s the role he wants, to be in there at the end and close it out.”
