Here’s the bottom line.
Prior to Saturday the committee had SMU ranked ahead of Bama knowing already the difference in resumes. If a 3-1 record over ranked teams was such a big deal then Bama should already have been ranked ahead of them Tuesday night. You would also need to rank Bama ahead of a team like Indiana or Boise St with similar logic. They’ve already mentioned how MAKING it to a conference title is a data point. The fact that SMU rallied back and actually outplayed Clemson the entire second half literally losing on a 56yd field goal as time expires leave little room for the committee to be harsh. What makes the most sense is you give them a point for making it and then take that point away for losing since it was close. To me that means it’s a wash so you leave them inside the top 12. If it was a blowout loss I think we’d all agree it would be hard to overlook.
At some point you have to lose the benefit of the doubt and two of your losses being to unranked teams is a really bad look. Imo they really negate 2 of your ranked wins. You can’t lose by 21 to a 6-6 team where you don’t even score a TD and expect to be given the benefit of the doubt. It’s the worst loss by any team inside the current CFP top 25 to an unranked team by margin of defeat.
I think most would agree 9-3 isn’t even necessarily the problem it’s how bad 2 of the losses were AND that Oklahoma game was horrific.
College football has been wildly unpredictable. This isn’t your normal SEC or even Bama team who annihilated everyone they played and has 2-3 close losses to good teams. Bama even in a win was on the ropes against a team like USF….
You can laugh, but SMU could beat Bama and we’ve already seen games where Bama was a heavy favorite and got their ass smoked.
The parity of this sport and Bamas inconsistencies removing the benefit of the doubt for them has made this an easy decision.
The right thing to do is reward SMU for a hard fought championship game and stop pretending like this is a Nick Saban Bama.
It’s an absolute joke/sickening for this sport if Bama who just lost to a terrible Oklahoma team in devastating fashion randomly gets rewarded for achieving nothing and sitting at home, while SMU fought their ass off to win a title.
**** this committee.
