As we pause the next 26 hours or so to reflect on our 3 senior's careers, let's look at how relevant UGA basketball is at this very moment.
First, what defines relevancy in college basketball?
1. Rankings... Love them or hate them, any news about a college team starts with where they are ranked. We are not ranked nor nearly ranked.
2. "Bracketology"... Stealing the ESPN moniker for lack of better... It means that any discussion of the big dance will include your team and continue the discussion with phrases such as: What seed? Or Who will they play? We are not in anyone's bracketology discussion.
3. News feed. How often does your team show up in whatever news feed you or your friends look at daily. Lacking that, what if you use Google or Ask Jeeves to search UGA basketball? What do you find? How many articles by how many news organizations? Are the stories positive in nature, or are the stories generally bringing up bad items, like losing streaks, coaches on the hot seat, or losing recruits? Go Ask Jeeves about UGA basketball and see what comes up. I'll wait.
4. What is the "vibe" on your favorite fan message board? Everyone discussing favorite victory cigar/bourbon pairings, or arguing about Maryland coaches from the 80's, Alex?
When we hire a new coach, let's hope she/he A) doesn't use Ask Jeeves, and B) makes us relevant in NCAA basketball.
