one of the all-time great and interesting characters in music. The self proclaimed first Jew to play on the Grand Ol' Opry. He and his band "The Texas Jewboys" were well known for satirical songs like "Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed" and "They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore", but he was a prolific songwriter. He wrote some truly great songs, including ballads. The 1998 cd "Pearls in the Snow" a tribute album by many great artists singing and playing his music is one of my all-time favorites. Do yourself a favor and check it out on youtube.
He was also a writer and his mystery detective series was very popular.
