wreck here in Oconee Cty last night. (just past downtown Watkinsville on Hwy 15) Another is in critical condition as well as a female from Watkinsville in the other car. Just awful. Here's Sheriff Berry's statement:
I just left ARMC after spending the night there with the friends, sorority sisters and families of the young ladies killed on Highway 15 last night. The victims have all been identified positively but we continue to withhold their identities due to extended family notifications and the fact that families have to travel a significant distance to arrive in town. We respect their privacy at this point and I trust you will as well. We grieve with them and we pray for comfort and solace during these unimaginable circumstances. The surviving occupant of the car is in critical condition and we pray for her healing as I am sure you do.
I can not thank Oconee Fire Rescue enough for their dedication to our county. The University of Georgia Police Department sent an investigator to both the scene and the hospital to help aid in identification and notification to families, and Chief Williamson was at the hospital with me all night. His assistance and the assistance of the UGA community was invaluable, timely and professional. ARMC and their entire emergency department was at our disposal and demonstrated the care and compassion they are known for.
To the YoungLife group and leaders that were at the hospital, as well as the other young men and women that were there. You were patient, compassionate, respectful and prayerful I am thankful to have met you and see your love and concern.
The Oconee County Sheriff's Office has no comment on the cause or nature of this crash. The crash is being investigated by GSP Athens and they will speak to that.
I will release the names of the victims here as soon as I am satisfied that their families are in town and all the notifications are complete. I won't rush the process, so it will take as long as it takes.
