Gadogs.com: MBB Notes: Georgia To Face Notre Dame In Holiday Hoopsgiving

https://georgiadogs.com/news/2022/1...gia-to-face-notre-dame-in-holiday-hoopsgiving

Pre-game Quotes:

Head Coach Mike White

On the team preparing for Notre Dame...

"We needed an opportunity to get healthy, both from a physical standpoint and we suffered illness there for a while. To get rest, to be able to focus on academics there for a few days, we were a little rusty when we came back. Yesterday, we were as sharp as
we have been. Hopefully we see the same thing today."

On the team focusing solely on basketball with the academic semester over...

"It is a big opportunity. It is something we talk about year in and year out. We all want to be pros. All these guys want to be pros one day. The essence over the next three or four weeks, that is what they are. They get the opportunity to focus solely on basketball, get in the gym a little bit extra and focus on their bodies, health, sleep and that is it. There is very little distraction. Some teams handle that better than others, and hopefully we are one of the teams that takes it home."

On the health status of the team...

"For today's practice, as far as I know as long as nothing changes within the next few hours, we are at full strength. We were at full strength yesterday for the first time in a long time. You do the best you can with what you have got. The guys that played last week played well. It was arguably one of our best performances. I thought Georgia Tech played really well too. It was possession error, possession error, turnover, missed shot. A mishap was one responsibility and it was block heavy. It could have gone either way. I was proud of that performance."

On playing competitive games...

"It has got to hurt to a certain extent, but we also can't dwell on it. We have to think about the next play and have the next practice, next game mentality. Watch the film very closely. There are things that we just talked about, but there are a bunch of positives too. This is growth. This is a development year. This is a play we wouldn't have made three weeks ago. We showed some of that as well."

On being fans of Rick Mirer and Tony Rice...

"Those guys were studs. I was locked into Notre Dame football as a kid. That was my lifelong dream to play quarterback to play quarterback at Notre Dame."

On playing football growing up...

"I did until I transferred to Jesuit High School from Orono High School in Maine. The Jesuit High School in New Orleans, you learn very quickly if you are the freshman quarterback, you should probably be focusing on another sport."

On being a fan of Notre Dame basketball...

"Absolutely. Midway through my freshman year of high school, I put all of my focus into hoops. I got cut by varsity and the JV. I played on the freshman team. At that point, it was, I am going to commit to basketball at Notre Dame. They did recruit me a little bit. An assistant, Jimmy Black, would send me letters from time to time. It didn't work out, obviously. My brother, Danny, who was at Tennessee, actually played for Coach Brey at Notre Dame. He got a chance to live it. My older brother Brian is a Notre Dame graduate as well."

On the scheduling of playing Notre Dame in Atlanta...

"It happened probably my first month on the job here. Who is available? Who has interest playing in Atlanta? That is it. I am not overly excited to play Mike Brey, if I am going to be honest. I don't know who is. It is a program that I have a ton of respect for. My father hired Mike Brey. It is arguably one of his greatest hires of his incredible career. It will be neat to see Coach Brey and to compete against the Irish. It is an incredible honor for our program."

On if having players who have competed against Notre Dame is an advantage...

"Not unless we jump into a 2-3 zone, which needs a lot of work."

On what stands out about the Notre Dame team...

"They are pretty extreme in certain areas. They are a really unique team. They are really big. They don't play really deep at all. They really shoot it. They do not turn the ball over. They play at a very unique pace. You cannot speed them up. They shoot the three well. They are really skilled. They are really sound defensively. They are going to keep it in front. We are going to have to make some shots. They do a great job of defending the glass, too. That has been a high strength of ours. It will be a little bit more difficult against these guys to get those extra possessions."

On if his parents will be in attendance for Sunday's game...

"I think my parents will be there, yeah."

On if this will be the first time his father has ever rooted against Notre Dame...

“That’s a great question. Maybe. Maybe.”

On the energy of yesterday's practice...

"A lot of things stood out. The energy, you could feel it. The guys were excited to be there. We addressed our guys a couple days ago. It was almost, and you deal with that sometimes unfortunately, when in these spans of 12 days between games, academics is almost over with, it can backfire. It can become drudgery. The challenge a couple days ago during practice was, 'guys, I don't understand why we are not incredible and ready to be here today?' I know we came off a tough loss, but we have another opportunity this weekend. This group has always really responded to those chats. Whether it is amongst each other or it is staff to guys, we are all taking together. This is a group that is really receptive. We came back yesterday, and we were fantastic. Not that we made every shot and we did turn the ball over, but our energy level, our focus and our attitude was really good yesterday."

On the difference is the number of players both teams use off the bench...

“It could be an advantage. It could be a disadvantage. I just don’t know. I don’t know how much – we’re still searching ourselves. If we’re just dead set on we have to play really fast, and we have to play a bunch of guys, we’d sell out to it. I’m not sure we’ve made that decision to sell out to how many we’re playing or how fast we’re playing. Our tempo is a little faster than theirs. We’ve had some positivity from playing a little faster.
We’ve also struggled when we’re playing a little faster too. We’re trying to find that
happy medium of how many we’re playing, how many minutes guys are getting, what
our rotation is and what is our best tempo offensively and defensively.”

On where his team has grown the most and where they can still grow...

“Offensive rebounding and defending the three, in both those categories, I want to say we’re in the top-10 or near top-10 nationally. The glaring weakness with this team right now, and there’s not a close second, is our ball security and the decisions that we make with the basketball. We had eight, I want to say, until the last three or four minutes against Georgia Tech, which gives you the chance to steal one on the road against the ACC. We had three or four down the stretch. Both examples of what it could be, and not that anything was perfect during those first 36 minutes. We were far from it. Georgia Tech took one. It’s early in the season, but that’s the category that we have to continue to improve. There’s others as well. We throw out some zone, probably more than we wanted to, kind of in fear of how many guys would be available. It wasn’t great, and it kind of backfired on us a little bit. We spent a little time trying to figure how you could zone such a skilled team like Notre Dame, and who know if we’ll throw it out there or not. We have to work on our transition defense. Our defense, I think, has gotten better. Our overall execution – I go back to turnovers. Early on, a lot of it you could pinpoint
emotion decision, erratic decisions, overly competitive decisions in terms of ‘I got to go make a play because they just went on a 5-0 run.’ Those have actually reduced a little bit. Now, it’s, if you study our numbers, it’s incredible how many turnovers are just illegal screens or just stepping out of bounds or unforced decisions that should be a little bit easier to control.

On how important it is to win against a quality team outside of the conference...

“We’re not in a position right now where we’re focused on the post season, just being honest. We have to get better today. I hope that in a month, I’ll be able to answer that with quality wins and computer numbers and all that stuff. We’re not that good right now. We’re not. We’re trying to be that good, and we show glimpses of it. This will be comparable to an SEC game. We have a bunch of them. It’s a great opportunity for us for a win but for development as well.”

On Frank Anselem...

“Kind of going up and down a little bit, like a few guys. In Frank’s defense, he doesn’t know that he’s just going to get 30 minutes too, so he’s fighting through healthy competition too. He had a good practice yesterday. He’s a guy who can be a high-level defender and finisher. With him and a few guys, we’ve kind of pivoted a few times offensively to try and find the certain way of play that gives us the best chance. He’s trying to figure that stuff out and overcome it as well.”

Belmont
Bruins Return to Game Action, Travel to Georgia Saturday

  • “Despite its 3-6 record, Belmont owns a top 100 NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) ranking of No. 96, which is the third-highest of any Missouri Valley Conference team. Georgia enters the weekend with a NET ranking of No. 50.
  • The Bruins' non-conference strength of schedule is currently ranked as the 13th-most difficult in the nation. Furthermore, Belmont's average opponent NET ranking is the fifth-highest in the country.
  • The Bruins have already faced three teams ranked in the top 25 of the NET – No. 13 Iowa (Nov. 20), No. 15 Villanova (Nov. 25) and No. 22 Middle Tennessee (Nov. 16). In fact, six of Belmont's first nine games have been against top-65 NET teams with back-to-back matchups against No. 65 Georgia Tech (Nov. 27 and Dec. 4) and a home date with No. 38 Louisville (Nov. 13).
  • With a challenging four-game stretch from Nov. 13-25, the Bruins have already taken on three nationally-ranked teams. The Cardinals were ranked seventh in the nation when they visited Nashville on Nov. 13 and Belmont traveled to Middle Tennessee just three days later before heading to fourth-ranked Iowa on Nov. 20. On Friday, Nov. 25, the Bruins battled then 23rd-ranked Villanova in a high-scoring 83-80 loss.”

West Palm Beach Invitational: Georgia Headlines Holiday Lineup
The four-team field at the West Palm Beach Invitational features NCAA Tournament hopefuls and potential dark horses of the 2022-23 basketball season.

Georgia Bulldogs (9-2)
“The lowdown: No more Jenna Staiti or Que Morrison? Losing your former Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year to an in-league rival?
So far, those departures have done little to slow down a Georgia team coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances — even one with a new leader on the sideline in former Missouri State, Albany and UCF coach and UGA player Katie Abrahamson-Henderson.
An impressive 14-point win over always-tough in-state rival Georgia Tech has been the highlight thus far, though defeats earlier this season in what could’ve been resume-building wins against Seton Hall and NC State have the Dawgs on the right side of the early-season tourney bubble, but still needing to pick up some quality victories outside of the SEC to make them feel truly safe.

What better place to do that in West Palm Beach against two solid programs in West Virginia and San Diego State?
Georgia’s biggest strength all year and its defining trait in the Sunshine State will almost certainly be rebounding as the Dawgs usually dominate on the boards, averaging 17.4 offensive rebounds per game (fifth in America) and having nine different players on the roster that average at least three boards per night. Plus, UGA’s smooth transition into this year with all the turnover is largely due to the fact that Abrahamson-Henderson managed to bring some of the best parts of UCF’s roster a year ago with her to Athens.
Georgia’s current top-two scorers, Diamond Battles (14.5 points per game) and Brittney Smith (12.1), both played under Abrahamson-Henderson in Orlando and made the move up north right along with her when she was hired. Now, it makes for a duo that has the Dawgs entering West Palm Beach as arguably the hottest program in the field.
Games in Palm Beach: vs. West Virginia, 2:30 p.m. Tuesday; vs. San Diego State, 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.”
