Scrimmage notes:

Darnell Washington had a 40-yard catch and run. He broke several tackles and was really hard to bring down. He looked like he has a few times in his career when he just bodies people.

Overall it was not a sloppy scrimmage. Kirby will be upset about a few penalties but there weren’t turnovers. No interceptions and no fumbles. The first team offense faced the first team defense. Same for the second and third teams.

The first-team offense looked sharp. Stetson Bennett looked good and then Carson Beck came in and was able to move the ball with the first team offense as well. The offense was able to run the ball when they needed to but didn’t run it a lot as they were throwing it more to the bunches.

The defense ran more pressures than normal. They also got beat when they did it too much

There weren’t a lot of missed tackles either. There were plenty of good tackles in open space, including notable ones by Smael Mondon and Xavian Sorey.

What stood out as really impressive was freshman wide receiver Dillon Bell coming in and catching a number of passes. (Side note: Called it)

Dom Blaylock caught a long touchdown pass.

Kenny McIntosh had about a 65-yard touchdown run against the first-team defense.

The kicking was not good. The punting wasn’t either. Was bad. They also missed a few field goals early but made some later.

With Tate Ratledge out, they tried different players at his right guard spot. We mentioned Jared Wilson earlier, but Xavier Truss, Devin Willock and Warren Ericson were also rotated in with the first team.

One observer told me that Brock Vandagriff looked solid. He really moved around well. He also noted that Bennett moved around in the pocket well and hit some really good balls. There were a few he could have hit but didn’t. There weren’t a lot of throws to Brock Bowers or Arik Gilbert.

Branson Robinson and Andrew Paul both ran the ball well. Daijun Edwards didn’t have as strong a scrimmage as he has had in the past.

Malaki Starks was in for Chris Smith for a while to get extra reps. His coverage was critical on a number of plays as he had a couple of knockdowns.

DeNylon Morrissette was held out.
