After watching the game a second time i have some observations.
Im not going to state the obvious JJ needs to be better and Yantes a stud.
1. Fox triangle offense is horrendous against competent athletes. The first half is a perfect example of what happens when you make your team easy to guard. Horrible habit passes from practicing hundreds of time, Clemson didnt force many turnovers, we handed the ball to them. Fox needs to keep the simple offense from last year.
2. Pace will be important for this team.
The team barely ran any kind of transition offense, everything was in the half-court. Clemson half-court D has always been stout and we played right into their hands. Were gonna need to push it more for easier shots and play simple offense moving forward.
3. MTM defense is still the wrong base D for this team.
Struggling to stay in front of people. Wide open threes. Offensive rebounds.This needs to be a match-up zone team period. It will help minimize mistakes for the freshmen and help cover our older players lack of quickness moving side to side.
4. The 4 on 5 dilemma aka KPG loyalty lol
KPG getting 17 minutes a game will spell doom for this team. KPG cannot be the guy on the floor this season. He is what he is. A hustle player who shouldnt be at this level period. Clemson simply didnt guard Geno. Juwan gets a pass because he was more aggressive tonight than anytime ive seen him and we need that. He played solid D and grabbed 8 rebounds to boot. Juwan being aggressive is something we need, i dont care if he shoots 40 percent from the field. Fox trust him so he needs to be aggressive because he wont get pulled for it unlike the younger players.
5. Newcomers better get used to riding the pine.
In these early season games TC,PD, JH better get used to not playing because Fox is still not comfortable playing freshmen and new players. KPG played 17 minutes combined for zero points, 1 reb,1 assisst, and 1 block. TC,PD and JH can produce that in their sleep. If Fox would commit to the matchup zone he could play the Frosh and PD more.
6. The substitution pattern was horrendous.
There is no excuse for cutting a lead down to three then allowing a lineup of JJ, Kessler, Wilridge,Edwards and JP to see half a second on the floor together. Coach Fox cant make these kinds of incompetent mistakes or well underachieve in a league that going to be pretty bad.
Overall Point.:The coaching needs to improve or else this team may win 20 games and miss the tourney again due to a weak league and some coaching led losses.
