When I was a kid, my dad would get us tours of naval vessels docked on the Savannah River. We toured a lot of ships, including submarines. I was always impressed by the sailor bunks that were right on top of the torpedos. I guess “sleeping over the torpedo” will now take on new meaning.

I remember a destroyer one year. The cook was making cookies and giving them out. My dad took my brother and sister to see the guns and depth charges. Fuvk that. I ate all of the cookies. Would have enlisted if they took 6 year olds.
I always thought the periscope was real cool. I was big into the tv show “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.”

I remember touring a British guided missile frigate. They covered all of the control panels to protect sensitive info.

Worked for a stevedoring company in 1980 and was on a Chinese ship at the grain terminal. They had rows of AK’s locked up in the hallways. The Customs officer was like WTF?
