The Braves signed Greg Maddux away from the Cubs after he won the 1992 CY Young award. Maddux did not find immediate success in Atlanta, at least in terms of wins and losses. Avery, Glavine, and Smoltz all went to the 1993 All Star Game. Maddux took a vacation with an 8-8 record, but sterling 2.83 ERA.

After the All-Star break, Maddux would make 16 regular season starts. He would go 12-4 with a 1.79 ERA. He would allow more than two earned runs once in those 16 starts, while only being relieved once with less than six innings pitched. He only went five and two-thirds in that game.

In the 16 starts, Maddux would pitch 8 innings or more 8 times. He would go on to win his second consecutive Cy Young Award, helping the Braves erase the Giants 9.5 game early August lead in the last great pennant race baseball will ever see.
