A lot of higher echelon schools had road games against lower rung schools: Michigan State at Western Michigan, SMU at Baylor, Penn State at Temple and Mississippi State at Southern Miss.
Obviously, all the match ups were intrastate battles, so it's not like the road games were really in front of hostile crowds. Why? A good will sort of thing? From Baylor's POV, I can kind of understand it, as they would get to perform in an area with far better recruiting prospects than the Waco area. The only other explanation (that I can logically come up with), is that some of these games were scheduled before the rise of the road teams (but that wouldn't necessarily explain PSU at Temple). Anyway, I wonder how much of this was purely coincidental, or if it's the beginning of a trend.
Edit: Vandy was also at WKU (albeit, not an intra state game, but not terribly far from Nashville).
Re-Edit: Nevermind what I said about Vandy. ;-)
