Not sure that there's a peer for him in sports long-form storytelling these days.

Advance notice - requires a subscription - but his openers are always worth the price of admission:

"And I promise this is the hardest part: To imagine any of this for yourself, you have to imagine it for someone else. Even in the smallest games and diversions, the freedom and the little happinesses you want for yourself cannot exist without the admission that someone else must have them, too. That won’t be easy, but it’ll be alright, because sometimes the most revolutionary ideal you can believe is that there will be a future, and in it, things will for one second be alright.

Imagine your world as it’s currently ordered as a little train station you’re passing through. You’ll inevitably bump into people. You’ll scramble some days to get from point A to B. Some trains will arrive late, and others will be on time. You’ll think of all of the people you’ve been here with, or maybe the people you can’t be here with anymore. I do. Every time it’s August, I think about everyone I can’t do this with anymore because they’ve taken lines I can’t board yet, and about the times I was lucky enough to take a ride with them."
