First off that was just a fun game. Felt like 2 good teams going at each other. All those lead changes and big plays, just great competition.
Lot of interesting things tonight that give me hope for the year. Like most of us have said this is our deepest roster, we have some players and some options. I get the complaints about letting their big guy kill us but I liked the strategy of defending the 3 point line. 2 years ago they spread us out and killed us from out there on the drive and kick. Also liked the time we came out matchup zone out of a timeout to mix it up. Think we could have mixed it up more but props to the staff for their game plan.
Speaking of coaches, Coach Carter has taken over the clipboard and the huddle in late game situations in multiple games. Shows he is a guy who hopefully knows his stuff and who Fox really trusts. Also at the 8 minute mark we had 3 freshmen in the game and played 4 tonight. Either this group of freshmen are more advanced in their understanding that previous years or Fox is allowing for more freshmen opportunities. And a small thing but with 16 seconds left Fox put in Hightower to potentially help handle the press and the ball if St. Mary's scored. Good sign, another thing we refused to do last year in getting an extra ball handler in.
personnel wise there was a lot of encouraging things to go around.
Turtle is coming into his own. He is playing like the kid I coached in HS. under control, picking his spots and shooting with confidence. Drew a hell of a job too trying to chase their PG around all game too. Proud of him, such a hard working kid. He deserves the success and he definitely doesn't back down from big moments.
Ogbeide had easily his best game of the year. Can be a great rebounder.
Parker has limitations in his game but he rebounds solidly for us and has as good of midrange game (and FTs) as you will see. Such a soft dribble pull up shot.
Lot more you could point out good and bad but I'm going to enjoy this one for a bit. Huge win we needed with a tough schedule ahead of this team. to get a true road win and then a quality win in our week in California is big. Hope the way we played the last 2 games in stretches carries over and gives us confidence. Marquette is going to be a tough environment Saturday.
