Sulla was able to effect change and reorganize the Republic. He also stepped down after all of that and turned over power peacefully. This actually is not a bad example since Lincoln wasn't able to do that. I believe Lincoln would have stepped down but he never did get to that point did he? I like the example though. Well done.

My nephew's wife's grandfather was an Army 4* General who passed away a few years ago. He served from 1951-86. I had the honor of spending time with him over his last years when our families would get together. He lamented the difference between how high command's (O-7 and up) mindset changed over the last 40 years. Your priorities changed from leadership, development and the best way to carry out policy to how do I set myself up to grease defense contractors, set yourself up on MIC(Military Industrial Complex) boards, and become basically a politician while still in service. They are so worried they'll offend a powerful politician with DOD oversight and lose their spot on the gravy train. Those are the generals and admirals that need to be fired and stripped of benefits.

My dad retired as a Marine Colonel. He was a liberal like all of his family until attending the Army War College. That totally changed his outlook on politics. As a full bird nearing retirement General Gray asked him to move to DC where he would be promoted to general. He wanted none of that and retired. Too much BS and butt kissing in the higher ranks.
