Call me an old lady if you wish, but I do find misuse of words grating at times. Don't even get me started on people who use "gift" as a verb rather than a noun. The verb is "give." It always has been and always will be. Also, nuts to those who use "effort" as a verb. It just isn't and no legion of ignorant radio hacks can make it so.
But I digress as today my irritant is the use of the word "swag" as though it means the same thing as swagger. It doesn't. To swagger is to "Carry oneself with an air of arrogant or overbearing self-confidence." This is the verb used to describe the carriage of certain athletes. "Swagger" can also be a noun, as in "that guy has swagger."
The slang use of "swag" has nothing to do with "swagger." Aside from its use in the world of curtains, swag means about the same thing as "booty" or treasure illegally obtained, as by a pirate. If a player has swag, then he stole it. If he has swagger, then he just things a little too highly of himself.
