Three Observations

3. Beat the rush.

Can we just go ahead and start hating Ryan Williams? He seems like a nice guy but you can tell he’s going to be the next Jerry Juedy or Amari Cooper. I don’t mean hate him like Jermaine Burton. Nobody who can’t vote yet deserves that type of scorn. But more like a DeVonta Smith who flipped from Georgia to go to Alabama and won a Heisman. No need to wait. Let’s go ahead and start hating Williams like a Tennessee fan hates corrective dentistry.

We need to watch how Georgia plays Williams. Will the Bulldogs put Julain Humphrey on him? Will Kirby Smart play Malaki Starks at Star and double Williams? How much man coverage will Georgia use knowing that Jalen Milroe is a huge threat to run? Yet the Bulldogs know they have to pressure Milroe more than they did last year. Georgia needs to stick to Williams like a student loan.

2. We are talking about the wrong guy.

I originally planned to write a whole segment on Jalen Milroe. He makes me more nervous than playing Perfection with extra pieces. Yet we need to focus on the other Jalon.

Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker versus the Alabama offensive line could determine the outcome of this game. Alabama has given up six sacks in three games. For reference, Georgia has given up two sacks in that same span. Walker versus Kadyn Proctor or Wilkin Formby on a third and long will be must viewing. He can shoot gaps, drop into coverage or even spy if needed. He may be driving the buses to Tuscaloosa.

We waited two years for the Georgia coaches to, by their own admission, get “comfortable” using Walker’s hybrid linebacker abilities. So far they appear as comfortable as your wife in a stolen hoodie. He’s another part of the chess match. While all eyes are on Milroe, Walker will be the one putting him in check.

1. Take to the air

Whoever can run the ball will win. It’s an axiom whose validity is only surpassed by its simplicity. Yet let’s look at the Georgia air attack.
The pundits have been griping about Carson Beck and the Bulldog's lack of vertical threats. That just shows you all those years of kindergarten didn’t go to waste for those talking heads on TV.

Georgia can and will air the ball out. Arian Smith is playing his best football. He’s blocking on the edge like an ugly girl protecting her hot friend at the bar. Dillon Bell is a star and Dominic Lovett is in a contract year. Conversely, Alabama is rebuilding its secondary. Nine out of its 12 members are either freshmen or transfers.

Georgia is better through the air than everyone thinks. I expect we will see that on Saturday.

Two Questions

2. Are the new Alabama coaches ready?

Just because you coach an SEC team doesn't mean you are an SEC coach. Ask Bryan Harsin. There is a learning curve to playing in this conference. Alabama’s staff has some SEC experience, while Georgia’s staff is full of long-time SEC veterans. Heck, the Bulldogs' secondary coach was at Alabama last year. In the press conference on Monday, Smart downplayed the addition of Travaris Robinson, as he should. Still, it won’t hurt that the guy who was part of running Alabama’s defense last year will be on Georgia’s sideline tomorrow.

Let the hazing begin.

1. Who will run the damn ball?

Both teams can throw the ball. But who is going to man up and establish the run on Saturday?

Although it's early in the season, Alabama is averaging 93 rushing yards more per game than Georgia. But they ain’t played nobody. Facing Georgia is a bit tougher than South Florida. A Bulldogs defense with Warren Brinson and maybe Mykell Williams is a different animal altogether than what Kentucky faced.

Georgia is in the back of the pack in the SEC when it comes to running games. To be fair though, the Bulldogs actually played two good teams and sat their top tailback for one of those contests. Trevor Etienne is going to get lathered up like a Herbal Essences commercial.

One Prediction

Smart has had two weeks to get his team healthy and game plan. He’s 7-1 after a bye week. He’s 26-2 with eight or more days to prepare for an opponent.
Yes, this game is going to be harder than prom wood. Everyone needs to eat their Flintstones and grab a fresh mouthpiece out of the boiling water.
Georgia is 2-1 in Bryan Denny Stadium this century.
The Bulldogs will be 3-1 if Carson Beck hits his marks.

Shout out again to the Bulldog Snacks folks. They have already turned in huge $ amounts to Georgia's NIL efforts. So please don't buy any more of those generic bars and cookies at the grocery store. Get the Bulldog version of what you were going to buy anyway.
