Mayor Pete was a complete and utter joke. I don't think anyone is arguing that.

But the bar for Trump should not be "at least he cant be worse than Biden's..." Gaetz, assuming he really is the choice, is an awful choice. Better than Garland, doesn't mean he is not awful. I still do not think he will go through with nomination process. I think Trump is using him as a bargaining chip and he will be replaced. But if not, it is terrible.
