After the Vandy game, many were convinced we had major problems at QB and our OC was in over his head. But the Vandy game rarely tells us what kind of team we really have, and I was more encouraged by the 11 for 14 finish than the 0-7 start, and that goes for both Grayson and Schotty. Our OC simplified the routes to get the passing game going and our QB responded. Fortunately, that carried right over to the next game. Over the last 6 quarters of play, Grayson is now on a streak of completing 34 out of his last 38 pass attempts for 446 yards, 4 TDS (including 1 rushing TD) and zero interceptions. Consider by the way that Grayson was briefly benched in the first half at Vandy, yet the coaches went back to him in the 2nd half and never hesitated about making him the starter the following week.
Both Grayson and Schotty deserve huge credit for getting it worked out so quickly. Lambert wasn't even here for spring ball, but worked his butt off studying our playbook and competing in fall camp. It was a gutsy call by Schotty to gamble on the new guy after just a few weeks of working with him. Kudos to Richt by the way for letting Schotty make that call and for not panicking when things got off to a bad initial start. By the 2nd half of only our 2nd game, you could see that Grayson and Schotty had it worked out.
Meanwhile, Schotty has been using our other weapons in creative ways too, playing to the strengths of our WRs, getting our TEs involved, using Sony in a variety of roles, and naturally featuring Chubb as he should.
And most of all, as much as I truly liked and respected Mike Bobo and defended him for years, this is the first time in ages that I can honestly say our offense is not predictable. For years we've been told it's not about the play-calling but rather the execution. We all know better. You have to keep the opposition off-balance, just like a pitcher in baseball. And you have to call plays that maximize our strengths and exploit the opponent's weaknesses. We're FINALLY doing that.
Granted, we're blessed with a ton of weapons right now, but it takes a good OC to use them properly and Grayson Lambert's quick development has also been impressive.
