Isaac Kante is the quintessential Fox recruit. An ambitious kid who is a late bloomer. A kid from far away from Atlanta whom we didn't know existed six months ago. A kid I saw play AAU ball, but didn't know to watch for him because nobody knew his name back then.

And yet I am on pins and needles wondering if he will have the good sense to know what a good fit he would be if he signs to play in Athens. Kids like Kante remind me of how lonely it is to be a UGA hoops fan. If I am in my cups, I sometimes think "No one gives a damn about the things I give a damn about." How few of us care where Isaac Kante is headed? Yet without him, or someone with talents like his, success for Athens hoops will stay somewhere just over the horizon.

When we raise our children to be Bulldawg basketball fans, we owe it to them to tell them the truth. We teach them to have great aspirations. But we ought to warn them, "Resign yourself to the lifelong sadness that comes from never being satisfied." It comes with the territory. It comes when you wear the red and the black.

Georgia basketball is an addictive drug. It makes me think of the lyrics of this Jason Isbell song that goes almost like this:

If there's one thing I can't take
It's the sound that Georgia hoop fans make
About five seconds after their hearts begin to break.
That's one thing I can't take.

I pray for good news tomorrow. Signing Kante would be like taking another hit on the roundball drug that anesthetizes us into believing we will someday soon rise to the top of the SEC and wreak havoc in the NCAAs. I don't want to wake on Wednesday to bad news and make that sound that Bulldawg hoops fans make when their hearts break.
