Russell's chip-in for Eagle on 16 may be the greatest Dawg script-flip since we pick-sixed TN at our own goal line late in the second quarter about 15 years ago (can't remember the year, but I remember the emotion). He has been edging closer every week and yesterday was truly his day (love when the good guy with the great family wins, don't you?).
That makes Henley the third DawgOnTour to win in the first 10 weeks of the 2025 PGA Tour season. Sepp won The American Express in the Palm Springs Desert in January and Harris English won The Farmers at Torry Pines the following week, and now Russell at Bay Hill. That means 30% of the winners on the PGA Tour in 2025 are DawgsOnTour! The only real question is who's next?
We have nine DawgsOnTour in The Players this week including Will Chandler who had an amazing T6 finish in the Phoenix Open back in February. But who's next? Harry might feel like The Player's owes him one. Few will remember but he was the first-round leader in 2020 when the tournament was called after one round due to Covid (the first sporting event cancelled I believe).
Obviously, Russell has been super-hot, but he doesn't have a stellar record at TPC Sawgrass (only 6 made cuts in 12 attempts and a best T13 in 2022). But few are as good as a hot-putting Russell Henley, so don't count him out.
My pick this week has been flying low on the radar lately (6 of 7 cuts in 2025 and 3 Top 25s), but Brian Harman has 3 Top 10's in his last 5 Players (including T2 last year) and he is due. He hasn't won since raising the Clarett Jug nearly two years ago (already?), and frankly, watching all his boys winning this season has to be lighting a fire under this scrappiest of all Dawgs.
TPC is always exciting, but with nine of our guys in the field, I think 2025 very may well be the year of the first Dawg Players Champ!
