This is how to handle a rogue Dem Gov

Serious question. Do you really think this exchange made Trump look good?
It is a much better look for Trump than a Gov or AG (like in NY) saying that they can pick and choose the laws that they want to follow and disregard… What is to stop local sheriffs and DAs from not following the state laws they don’t like? Or citizens now from not following the laws they don’t like? It is exceptionally dangerous for state officials to go down this route

That is what is driving Democratic Party strategists crazy. Let them keep it up as the Democratic Party continues to tank in public support.
This is from last year:

A recent New York Times/Ipsos survey found the vast majority of Americans, including a majority of Democrats, don't think transgender athletes should be permitted to compete in women's sports.

"Thinking about transgender female athletes — meaning athletes who were male at birth but who currently identify as female — do you think they should or should not be allowed to compete in women’s sports?" the survey asked.

Of the 2,128 people who participated, 79% said biological males who identify as women should not be allowed to participate in women's sports.

It’s hard to believe the people of Maine voted for her.

Most Governors have over a 50% approval rating as does Mills, but she is the 6th least popular Governor in the nation.

Interesting point.

So does an executive order override a state law? Maine has a state law protecting trans athletes (and I’m not commenting on whether I agree with this law or not). Trump has not signed an a new law banning trans athletes, he simply signed an EO.

So is the position of the GOP now that EOs override state law? That would be an interesting new direction.

I think that is the the position of whichever party is in power… And yes I believe it is the law of the land until the courts say no

Title IX is the law. Biden issued an XO that interpreted the law in what most Americans believe is a perverse manner. (Men can play women's sports, take their opportunities and fill their Title IX spots)

Trump's XO merely restored Title IX to it's original meaning. (Women's sports are reserved for female participants)

I won't venture a guess about how SCOTUS will eventually rule but as of today, it looks like XXs playing with XXs and XYs playing with XYs is a big winner politically.

Sports makes that an interesting question. I would think if it is a nationally sanctioned ( NCAA) event then the Executive Order would apply, but if it is totally a state or local event within a state that has laws protecting Trans then the state law would apply. Another Decision for the SCOTUS.
With the massive public support for banning trans in women's sports, I would think those states with laws protecting that will be slowly isolating themselves from the rest of the country.

Title IX applies to high schools if they accept federal funding. It will boil down to SCOTUS deciding if a male claiming to be a female is entitled to title IX protection.

It only means that federal funding to the state will be upheld. There is no mandate that guarantees a state federal funding.

So yes, I believe a state can make its rules, but the Fed can not invite them to the dance.

Two completely different decisions.

I will agree with you on this that it’s a dangerous precedent. Many conservatives believe that we are a united nation independently sovereign states. If that’s the case, then we can’t pick and choose on when we agree with the feds sticking their nose in state business or not.

My personal view is that trans athletes born male should not be allowed to compete against females.

The question of when an EO takes precedence over state law is complex. As a general position, I thought the GOP was all about states rights, but that’s clearly dependent on the issue. Politicians being hypocritical. Shocking.

My primary comment was regarding how Trump looked during this exchange. He attempted to publicly bully the governor from Maine and she wasn’t having it. She said she’s going to follow state and federal law (a reasonable statement) and responded to his threat by commenting that they would settle it in court. Agree or disagree with her position, I think she came off as resolved and Trump came off as a hectoring bully.

But I’m sure many people saw Trump owning another lib. I simply disagree, and I think we are going to see more people publicly pushing back on Trump’s bullying tactics.

did you ever whine about bidens bullying tactics? Redundant question. We know the answer.

I believe in independent state rights. I also believe the fed can control their funds.

Two completely different arguments.

"My personal view is that trans athletes born male should not be allowed to compete against females." This is a strong consensus. I do not understand how anyone, left or right or center, could disagree. Could you imagine someone like Bruce Jenner who blew away the competition as a man, competing as Kaitlin Jenner and going against women?

"The question of when an EO takes precedence over state law is complex. As a general position, I thought the GOP was all about states rights, but that’s clearly dependent on the issue." I think it is important to note that Trump is NOT a traditional conservative. He does not give a shit about the GOP's traditional position. And federal law has ALWAYS trumped state law, even when fed law has not been passed through the proper congress channels. The way to combat that is not by saying "f you, we will do what what we want" Like Maine here and NY with immigration, it is by going through the courts and challenging the legality of said EO. Setting the precedent that "we don't like the law so we won't follow it" is exceptionally dangerous and will have ripple effects. It honestly is the same childishness behavior as Trump displayed when he continued to lie about the 2020 election since he did not like the outcome.

"Politicians being hypocritical" Politicians suck. On both sides. Part of the appeal of Trump. Trump was not created by having "dumb" followers. Trump was created by having bad corrupt power hungry dipshit politicians.

"My primary comment was regarding how Trump looked during this exchange" Does not matter what Trump says or how he says it. If Trump says 1+1=2, 49.9% the country will be absolutely up in arms about how dare he say it. He is a liar and a huge POS for saying that etc etc. On the other hand if he were to say 1+1=3, 49.9% the country would take that as the gold standard of new math. For this particular exchange, I did not think he was bad at all. He said, "comply with federal law" Federal law trumps state law. He did not call her names or anything that we have seen Trump do.
