I was at the game.

1) Army is a good baseball team. Let’s start there. They are fundamentally sound and are well-coached. They punched Georgia in the mouth early which is what you have to do against a superior opponent. These are young men (some who are commissioned officers that will be reporting to duty mere days after their final game) who are trained to be warriors and leaders, not a bunch of Techies who quit when the conditions aren’t favorable.

2) The wind was blowing in all game. Not exactly the best conditions for a power hitting team like Georgia. That was a bummer.

3) Dash was right about this Army pitching staff being a bad matchup for Georgia bats. Off speed pitches and ball placement kept Georgia off balance for the most part. Add in the wind blowing in all game..,,

4) Finley had a bad day. No one can argue that. Maybe it was the long layover, post season jitters (he is still young), whatever. He never seemed comfortable. Also, almost every Army batter stood on top of the plate and was aggressive swinging the bat. See #1.

5) Inexcusable errors once again continue to plague this team. Collins drops a good throw from Finley. Condon makes a bad throw back to 3B rather than eating the ball. Chadwick got caught taking too big of a lead at 2B with 1 out. And then there is the ongoing less than stellar outfield play. It is what it is at this point.

6) Condon’s HR was a no doubter when he made contact with that ball. He was elite at the plate. Army was smart to walk him but paid when they could not afford to.

7) Collins had a bad day. Let’s hope he has a better day at the plate today.

8) Zeldin came in and pitched a great game. It looks like he is back to himself after having a bad month. He just ran out of gas at the end. It’s easy to criticize Johnson for keeping him in too long (I did) but this is a long weekend of baseball and I’m sure he didn’t want to use any more of the pen than he had too. In the end it worked out.

9) Mracna is back to filling his role as a closer and, except for a few tense moments, slammed the door on Army. He’s going to be key in the post-season.

10) The one positive about Finley’s short outing is he still can give Georgia a few more innings if needed.

By all measures Georgia could have easily lost that game, but they never quit, kept fighting through the madness, and won a close game. That’s what an experienced roster will do. Also, this team just looks real close - a real brotherhood. CWJ has given the team leaders ownership of this team. That can only be a good thing for this team moving forward. These 4-team regionals are unpredictable and can be a grind.

Lastly, Army will beat Tech.
