Notes & Quotes

GEORGIA HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE

Opening Statement

“Good win. What a weird game. My goodness, two really good teams that struggled to get going offensively. They are one of the best defensive teams in the country. We really guarded at a high clip tonight. We got some stops down the stretch when needed. I thought our bench was really good. Jusaun Holt was plus 17. Frank Anselem really defended the glass at a high level I thought did pretty good offensively. Justin Hill was arguably as effective for us offensively as anyone with some timely shots. It was a gritty win — a hard-fought win. Two teams that I thought played really hard. We did a great job, despite them getting 14 offensive rebounds. I think that number is a little bit misleading because they missed a bunch of free throws. Thank God for us. They missed a few from the field and gave us opportunities. That 14-0 could have been a lot higher. They are one of the best offensive rebound teams in the country. Obviously, they are one of the best teams in the country turning you over. I want to say top five in the country if I am not mistaken. We get 18 there, so we have to continue to improve. I am thankful to the crowd that came out. I thought they were a really big factor in the win, especially defensively late in the game. Mississippi State is very, very good. Every team in this league is. We take every one that we can get. This is a good win for us.”

On free throw line performance...

“It was huge. Little swagger at the foul line, that’s awesome. It gives you chances in close games. Our guys continue to step up there with con- fidence. This team has gotten to the foul line a lot. We’re almost elite leaders in free throw percentage as well. We’ll continue to do that. We’ll continue to shoot a ton of them, but bottom line is we have pretty good free throw shooters.”

On playing at home versus on the road...

“Connection, we’re connected at home. Our crowd is a factor, especially late in the game defensively for us. I thought it got really loud, and I thought that our crowd was a factor down the stretch in helping us get stops. You’re fighting that on the road in this league. Every environment in this league is tough to play in and to have success against, especially offensively. We had a game the other night that we couldn’t get a goal offensively, of course we had another one earlier in the season where we actually played well offensively but couldn’t get a stop. So we’ll have to continue to search, and we’ll have plenty of opportunities in this league but they’ll all be very tough.”

On building a program and finding ways to win ...

“It’s really big. It’s really big. We talked postgame in the locker room that it’s a step. A step for us is winning a hard-fought, physical, tough-nose, gritty game versus a team that just gets after you and who has had a lot of success. When you don’t play great offensively, and they had 90% to do with that, they are terrific offensively. We played really well against Auburn. This was a different performance for our guys, so that’s a step in the right direction not only for this team but for our program. The next step is to at some point break through on the road.”

MISSISSIPPI STATE HEAD COACH CHRIS JANS

On what the team needs to clean up heading into the next game...

“When you’re on the road, there’s always pivotal possessions, there’s always pivotal shots for both teams. I don’t know if it was tied or there was one point difference with the last media timeout with three minutes and 45 seconds, there were going to be a bunch of them, and, certainly, everyone on the team had wanted do overs up until that point, but with under four [minutes] to play, it was going to come down to making some big plays. We had some great looks. We had guys shooting the ball that we wanted to shoot the ball, we got some offensive rebound kick outs, and we didn’t knock them down. There’s shots that, when you watch the game of basketball unfold, you expect that that ball to go in, and we just didn’t. We didn’t make the critical shots at critical times down the stretch, and it got away from us a little bit, and they made their free throws down the stretch to keep us at bay.”

On the impact of free throws making a difference in the outcome of the game...

“I’ll let you guys smarter than me try to dissect that and figure all that out. [We went] 7-for-22, and it’s become contagious for us. I never remem- ber a four-game stretch of anything quite like this. Certainly, I’ve been around teams that had poor free throw shooting numbers for a season, some individual games where that cost the win, but it’s like it’s become a disease within our program and it’s my job, obviously, to try to help them and I’m not helping them enough. I’ve tried different things, mentally, I’ve tried to work with guys individually, and our staff is doing the same.”

On pivotal shots not falling in the final
stage of the team’s games...

“We got great shots. I’ll be honest with you, with how the game unfolded, it’s how we need the game to unfold. It’s choppy and possessions were big, we changed our defenses up and that helped us. We struggled with the middle ball screen during the second half, and we had to switch our coverage we did a good job on the fly of doing that. At the end of the day, to win on the road, you’ve got to make crucial baskets down the stretch when it’s a one possession game. And they did. Give Georgia a lot of credit. They made the shots when they counted. But if you would have told me before the game we’d had nine turnovers again, 14 offensive rebounds, I would have said I like our chances, but unfor- tunately it wasn’t enough.”

Montverde romps Winter Haven in homecoming

The nationally ranked Eagles overwhelm the fourth ranked team in Florida with a second quarter surge

“We knew they had a very good team, one of the best public-school teams in Florida, if not the best or second best. But we probably played as good as we have this year,” said Montverde coach Kevin Boyle, winner of six national championships at the school.

Winter Haven was led by junior shooting guard Isaac Celiscar and senior point guard Kjei Parker with 16 points each while senior forward and Georgia-signee Dylan James and junior guard Jamie Phillips scored 10 apiece.”

SEC Basketball

St.Louis Post Dispatch: Tipsheet: Calipari feels heat as Kentucky falls back into SEC basketball pack

“Kentucky is unlikely to fire Calipari, given a buyout that approaches $46 million. But it’s not hard to imagine this relationship ending in an amicable split if another school comes calling.
While the Wildcats will get healthier this season and win some games. it’s getting harder to project enough victories to get them a decent seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Again, there are no soft spots on the SEC slate in 2023.
“I got to be a little bit of everything with this team,” Calipari said. “First of all, I’ve got to build them up. But I’ve still got to hold them accountable. And you’re looking at guys, like going nuts on people right now is not the answer. It’s just not the answer.

“Now can I be tougher on them in practice and all that? Yeah, I can. But, you know, again, there were things today that I look at and I just say, ‘We’re better than that.’

“Now, for me, this is a marathon. I still think this team could be good. Got to have a full roster and then we got to go.”

Kentucky

Joe Lunardi, ESPN.com: “There's no sugarcoating the obvious. Kentucky is fighting for its NCAA tournament life after losing at home to SEC bottom-dweller South Carolina. The Wildcats will not be part of our next bracket on Friday, and they can forget about any Final Four or national championship aspirations (including from yours truly). We've reached the point at which simple postseason odds come into play. A team with Kentucky's profile -- NET 62, 0-4 in Quad 1, zero wins against the field -- is less than 50/50 to make the tourney (46.5% in our Bracketology model). The saving grace is that the Cats have at least eight Q1 games remaining, plus the SEC tournament. So a turnaround can and may happen. But I'm only betting on it with someone else's money.”

David Cobb, CBSSports.com: “Kentucky plays an antiquated offensive style that is defined by a methodical pace and limited floor spacing. Without an elite defense that can consistently create transition opportunities, UK is getting bogged down in half-court sets and struggling to find a rhythm or build momentum. Schematically speaking, Calipari just doesn't have it in him at this point in his career to pull the strings necessary to unlock the potential of this roster.”

Hilltoppers Overcome Adversities in Key Conference Road Win

“At the 7:42 mark, WKU embarked on an 11-3 run that eventually game them a 67-66 lead with just under five minutes remaining.

The game continued to go back and forth, ultimately having 12 lead changes and seven ties. UAB (12-5, 3-3) tied it up twice in the waning minutes, 70-all with 3:47 left and 73-all with 1:59 left.

Both Jairus Hamilton and Jamarion Sharp fouled out in that time frame, continuing to provide key opportunities for Hilltoppers off the bench to step up in the adversity.

As time ticked away, WKU's Dontaie Allen hit a long-range 3-pointer from the top of the key with 30 seconds on the clock, giving the Hilltoppers a 76-73 lead.

UAB's Jelly Walker would hit a 3-pointer with just over a second on the clock, but WKU staved off the Blazers final attempts.

WKU's bench outscored UAB's 33-11, with 16 of those points coming at the hands of Jordan Rawls. The senior scored a season high along with four assists against just one turnover in his return from a hand injury…”

HOF

In the pantheon of basketball’s greatest dunkers, Dominique Wilkins deserves mention alongside such legends as Elgin Baylor, Connie Hawkins, and the great Julius Erving. Wilkins was a high flyer who electrified fans with his trademark windmill dunk and all-out effort. Whether going through someone or over someone, the “Human Highlight Film” as he came to be known was an artist with grace, power, and purpose. His style battles fought above the rim with Michael Jordan were epic and left crowds begging for more. Drafted out of Georgia by the Utah Jazz in 1982, Wilkins spent the majority of his career with the Atlanta Hawks where he remains the franchise’s all-time scoring and steals leader. In only his second season in the NBA, Wilkins began a streak of 11 consecutive seasons in which he averaged more than 20 points per game. During the 1985-86 season, Wilkins led the NBA in scoring with a 30.3 points per game average further solidifying his status as one of the game’s all-time scoring greats.

Gadogs.com: Talent And Drive Elevated Wilkins At Georgia (2022)

"The thing that impressed me the most about him was that he practiced just as hard as he played," said former teammate Derrick Floyd. "He made everybody in practice work harder. If you stole the ball from him, he was going to follow you down the court and block your shot."

"I think when you're in college you're always pretty raw, but Coach Durham did a great job of teaching us the fundamentals of the game. He was a great teacher," Wilkins said.

"That was a great time to be a part of Georgia sports," Wilkins said. "The football team was always great, basketball was being put on the map for really the first time, and we had a lot of fun. It set up for a great stay at Georgia for me.

"The three years I was there, I had a wonderful time. I didn't want to leave, actually, but it was time for me to go and show my talents in the pros."

Floyd, the longtime Director of Operations at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Athens and official scorer at Georgia men's and women's basketball games, has seen maybe more games at Stegeman Coliseum over the past 40-plus years than anyone. His favorite memory from Wilkins' days didn't come during a game, though.

"We were running this play in practice where I threw it to him and then I get it back while he pretends like he's going away from the play, but then I throw it up to him at the rim. LSU was in the gym waiting to practice before we played them the next day and Coach Durham was talking to (LSU coach) Dale Brown," Floyd said with a laugh.

"I threw it up to Dominique but the throw was way off and I was like, 'Man, he's not going to be able to get that.' And he went up and got it way outside the backboard and slammed it. LSU's players were like 'Oooh!' Dale Brown was under the basket like 'Oooh!' We ended up leaving practice after that. Coach Durham was like, 'All right, practice is over!'"
