Lee Martin
Long-time Central Georgia coach Lee Martin passes away
“Graduating from Perry, playing basketball at Georgia, and coaching at a selection of schools in the area and state, Lee Martin got around.
One of the top high school basketball players in the state in the early 1960s before becoming a successful coach, Martin died Monday at the age of 78 after an extended illness.
Services are Thursday at The Way Baptist Church in Perry, with visitation at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m., with Reverend Bob Powell, Martin’s son in law, co-officiating.
Martin helped Perry to a perfect boys basketball season and state title in 1962, the Panthers winning a sixth championship under legendary head coach Eric Staples. He was also an standout football player and state championship doubles tennis player.
He went to Georgia, and earned a starting spot as a senior, averaging 7.6 points a game.
His coaching career started at Northside, and continued at Westfield and then River North Academy.
After earning his Master’s at Georgie Southwestern, he became head basketball coach, athletics director, and assistant headmaster at Windsor...”

Feb. 22, 1964 - Coliseum Opens with Win over Georgia Tech
“The Coliseum was christened with an 81-68 victory over archrival Georgia Tech. Perry, Ga., native Lee Martin scored the first varsity basket in the Coliseum's history, 16 days after scoring the final bucket ever at Woodruff Hall. An 86-51 victory by Georgia's freshman team over Tech's freshmen preceded the inaugural game in, technically speaking, the first game in Coliseum history.”
LA Times: Greg Lee dies; UCLA basketball player under John Wooden who became a beach volleyball star
“Greg Lee once described the dominance of his UCLA basketball teams by saying if he had a perfect game, they would win by 50 points instead of 40.
It was no exaggeration. Those Bruins won national championships in 1972 and ’73 under coach John Wooden while amassing the bulk of a record 88-game winning streak that would end the following season.
A cerebral 6-foot-5 guard known for throwing lobs to big man Bill Walton, Lee was mostly a complementary piece while surrounded by seven future NBA players. He started his first two seasons on the varsity team before coming off the bench as a senior.
But his greatest professional success came on the sand, not the hardwood, while splitting his time between basketball and volleyball careers. Lee won a record 13 consecutive pro beach volleyball tournament titles from 1975-76 alongside partner Jim Menges, another former Bruin. Lee said one of the things that drew him to volleyball was having a bigger impact on his team’s performance.
“If I played poorly in volleyball, I was out of there,” Lee once told The Times. “If you made errors, you were history.”
