William August Kratzert, III was born in 1952 in Quantico, Virginia, the son of a service man who later became a head golf professional at Fort Wayne Country Club in Indiana……Thus Kratzert grew up in a golfing family……
Billy’s sister Cathy Gerring also plays professionally and owns three wins on LPGA Tour…..
Billy is the youngest winner in the history of the Indiana Amateur Championship at 16 years old…….Billy is also the youngest winner in the history of the the Indiana State Open, at 18 years old…….
Billy was a four year letterman at UGA from 1971-1974…….He earned All-SEC Honors in three of those years (1972, 1973, and 1974)…….He earned All-American Honors in 1973 and again in 1974……..He was Captain of the UGA Golf Team in 1973 and again in 1974……He helped lead the Bulldogs to two SEC Championships during his career at UGA…..
After graduating from UGA with a degree in Business Administration, Kratzert turned professional in 1974…….He became disillusioned after twice failing to gain his Tour card, and quit golf to work as a forklift operator……However, he overcame his brief golfing setback, and was successful in securing his PGA Tour card in 1976……..
Billy became a member of the PGA Tour and accumulated more than $1 million in career earnings……On the Tour, he won the 1984 Pensacola Open, the 1980 Greater Milwaukee Open, the 1977 Greater Hartford Open and the 1976 Walt Disney World National Team title……
In 1985, Kratzert became the 52nd PGA player to earn more than $1 million in his career on the tour…….His 20-year PGA career ended in 1996 with the four aforementioned tournament titles and almost $1.4 million in earnings…….Kratzert entered 465 tournaments, finishing in the money 283 times and in the top ten 59 times…….
Billy’s most successful years in professional golf were 1977–1980, when he finished in the top-12 on the money list in three of those four years……Kratzert’s best year for Majors was 1978, when he finished with a tie for 5th place in The Masters and a tie for 6th place in the U.S. Open……..
While, on occasion, Kratzert has played on the Senior’s Champion Tour, the main focus of his work currently is a course reporter for various media outlets including Golf Channel, CBS, ESPN, Turner Sports, SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio network, and PGATour.com…...He has worked as a TV golf analyst/commenter since 1997……
Kratzert was inducted into the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame in 1993 along side his sister Cathy Gerring who was recently inducted into the Hall in 2019……..
