Today is the big day for the GolfDawgs. They were poised for a solid 2nd place position with 2 holes to play last night before Grayson Sigg finished double-double. Lee McCoy, who was 5 over after 6 holes, and not having any chance of a counting score all day, makes birdie on his final hole to save the Dawgs a stroke for 3rd place. Look for McCoy to come out strong today. Today we play head to head with Southern Cal and Illinois (the two teams ahead of us), and McCoy is playing in the 4th spot for the Dawgs (because he is T60). Look for his pride to kick in today. This is where we will see the grinder in him (can will himself to a good score even if the course is too long for him). I expect him to have his best putting day today and record a sub 70 score.
Same thing for Sigg. He was a solid 2 over with 2 holes to play yesterday and finished with two 6s for a no count 78. He will be out for blood this afternoon, and I expect he will be one of the three lowest Dawg scores on Sunday.
The key today I believe is if Healy and Straka can continue their solid play. Zach has been hot for over a month and he may be the next emerging star on this squad, but he is playing in the final pairing with two of the best players in college golf, and his mental toughness will be tested. Sepp, frankly, is playing better than he ever has at the college level, and the pressure level goes up dramatically today, so I am really pulling for him!
If the guys can post a score of 290 or lower (+2), they will put themselves in great position for the final round tomorrow and will have an excellent chance to advance to match play on Tuesday. But, if the heat of the moment (and late afternoon Bradenton) get to them just a little, this course could easily push the Dawgs to a score of 300 today (this ain't bowling so that's not good!), and they could find themselves fighting to even make to the final 15 teams tomorrow.
Coach Haack will have them focused and as calm as they can be today, but it will be a long afternoon either way. Here's to a strong performance because I will be there tomorrow on hand, and I'm looking forward to these young pups pushing for team medalist honors come late Monday afternoon.
