OXFORD, Miss. --- The Bulldogs snagged five more metals, including a pair of league titles, to wrap up the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships on the Ole Miss campus Saturday.
Georgia’s men tallied 75 points for fifth place as Arkansas (121), Alabama (116) and Tennessee (84) grabbed the top three spots in the team race. This is the Bulldogs’ best total since also scoring 75 in 2017 to take fifth. The Lady Bulldogs finished with 33.5 points to take 10thwhile Florida (107), Arkansas (103) and LSU (96.5) made up the top three on the women’s side.
The Bulldogs had two champions, a silver medalist and a pair of bronze finishes to highlight UGA’s close to the meet. Sixth-year senior Darius Carbin collected the first league outdoor crown of his career in the high jump after starting the competition with five straight clearances. This victory marks Georgia’s first SEC outdoor title in the event since his friend and training partner Keenon Laine grabbed top honors in 2017.
Junior Matthew Boling captured the fourth gold medal of the meet for the Bulldogs and the first of his outdoor career. Crossing the line first in the 200-meter dash, he becomes the first Georgia male to win the event since Kendal Williams swept the 100m and 200m in 2018.
On the track, senior Elija Godwin transformed his bronze medal finish in the 400m last year into a runner-up showing thanks to the second sub-45 second performance of his career. The Bulldogs also collected a pair of third-place finishes on the final day. Senior Titiana Marsh was a spot off the podium in 2021 and responded by earning bronze in the triple jump this year thanks to ending her series with seasonal bests on her fifth and sixth attempts. As the sun began to set, senior Clay Pender weaved his way through the 800m final field to lock down his bronze a year after taking 18th in the prelims.
Other final day scorers for the Bulldogs included: Boling – m. 100m, 4th; junior Caleb Cavanaugh – m. 400m hurdles, 4th; freshman Bryce McCray – m. 400m hurdles, 6th; junior Gavin Beverage – m. discus, 8th.
On Friday, junior Ana da Silva saved her best throw for her last throw to re-set a school record and capture the Lady Bulldogs’ first outdoor shot put title since 2000. Senior Johannes Erm then concluded a weather-delayed day of action by capturing his first SEC decathlon crown and the Bulldogs’ second in a row (Kyle Garland, 2021).
Additional Friday scorers for the Bulldogs included: freshman Elena Kulichenko – w. high jump, T-4th; junior Shelby Tyler – w. high jump, 6th; Marsh – w. long jump, 8th.
During the meet’s first day on Thursday, a pair of Georgia throwers struck silver to tally a quick 16 points. Senior Alencar Pereira made a five-spot improvement from his 2021 finish at SECs to earn runner-up honors in the hammer throw. Then senior Ahmed Magour fired out of the gate on his opening javelin throw to finish second at his first conference meet.

The Lowdown: Carbin, who hails from San Jose, Calif., was the only competitor on Saturday to clear 2.24 meters/7 feet, 4 ¼ inches and with that result was crowned the high jump champion. Injured in 2021 and sidelined alongside his teammates in 2020 because of the pandemic, Carbin had finished ninth at his only other two SEC outdoor meets (2018-19). This time, he left no doubt by clearing all five of his heights on his first attempt.
Already owning the facility 200m record from Thursday, Boling bettered his record at the Ole Miss facility to win his first SEC outdoor title and second conference crown overall (60m, 2022). He came off the turn in front of the main grandstand and never looked back with a 20.01, knocking down his 20.24 from the prelims.
Godwin reached the podium for the second time in his career at the meet thanks to a speedy 44.81 for the silver medal. He finished just .07 behind the winner, Florida’s Champion Allison. While Godwin and his 4x400m relay partners were scheduled to meet Allison and the rest of the field at the end of the race, the Bulldogs ended up not fielding a team for the event.
Marsh, a native of Chester, Va., was in fifth place in the triple through four of six rounds with a mark of 13.22/43-4.50. In the fifth round, she soared 13.46/44-2 before going a windy 13.60/44-7.50 (2.9 meter/second) to solidify her third-place finish on her final try.
Pender, a native of Winder, Ga., altered the school’s all-time list in the prelims with a 1:48before taking control of the No. 3 spot on the UGA list on Saturday for a bronze medal. Pender nestled into the fifth spot throughout the first time around the track before surging into third on the final straightaway. He finished in 1:46.71 to boost his name from No. 6 to No. 3 in the Bulldog record books.
Georgia left the track in the 400m hurdles with a pair of scorers and eight more points. Cavanaugh, who was 14th in last year’s prelims, moved into the No. 4 spot in the school record books with the best time for Georgia since 2015 (49.75) to take fourth. McCray, his fellow Texas native, broke 51 seconds for the first time after making his lap in 50.96 for sixth. McCray’s finish gives him back-to-back sub-51 second performances.
Boling lined up in the 100m final during his first of two events on day three and scored with a fourth-place finish. In a race where the top four were only separated by .09, Boling shot across the finish line in 10.13 to give himself two top-four finishes in the event over the last two years.
Beverage arrived on campus for the 2020-21 school year after the Ona, W.V., native transferred from UC Riverside. In his second year with the Bulldogs, Beverage wasted no time setting the tone for the event as he sent his opening attempt in the discus a personal record 52.94/173-8, which during the first flight was the longest throw. He then came back with another career best (53.23/174-7) to score a point in eighth after coming into the meet seeded 14th.
Graduate transfer Julia Harisay answered her scoring performance in the javelin from Thursday, which was highlighted by a personal record, by hitting her second career best of the weekend in the discus. She went 48.75/159-11 on her opening attempt to finish one spot out of qualifying for the final in 10th.
In Georgia’s final action of the meet, junior Wesley John ran a career-best 5000m time of 14:53.81 to take 26th.
What’s Next For The Bulldogs?: The Bulldogs will train through next weekend before traveling to Bloomington, Ind., for the NCAA East Prelims (May 25-28). The NCAA Championships will arrive in Eugene, Ore., for the second year in a row and for the ninth time in 13 years. The Bulldog men captured the 2018 team national championship in the last meet before Oregon’s Hayward Field was renovated.
