First, there should be the ability to paste without formatting. It's annoying to have to highlight something I've just pasted and then have to click Remove Formatting. Just let me have the option to paste it without the formatting to begin with.

Second, text entered for a reply shouldn't persist if I close the tab. On more than one occasion I've started to enter a reply to a post, decided not to reply and closed the tab, and then later replied to another post without noticing that the text that I had entered from the replay that I didn't post was a part of that reply.

The first one I will suggest. The second one is a draft feature that has helped me numerous times

I get the benefit of a draft feature, but closing a tab is a deliberate act. I'd assume that most people who close a tab aren't planning to come back and finish the post they were working on. If so, they shouldn't have to worry about clearing the text from an unfinished post before another reply. Saving a draft should be an option. Making that the default is lazy design, imo.

It isn't lazy. It would be easier to make it disappear when you closed the tab. Someone had to make a draft feature. Closing tabs by accident happens to me when I am called away or interrupted. But maybe that is just me.

Not sure what the specific issue is with your posts...but, the default setting is to only save your "drafts" in the threads that you start commenting on. To put it another way: If I had started commenting in this thread, but decided better of it: My "scratch paper" in this thread should not be carried over to the other thread that I start commenting on.

"Draft Saved" should be thread-dependent and IS, based off my experience.

It's lazy in the sense that it doesn't take into account the fact that most people close a tab on purpose, not by accident, and don't want to have to deal with remembering to clear out the text from the aborted reply. Maybe the middle ground would be a Preference setting for saving drafts.

It should be post-dependent. If I start to reply to a post, then change my mind and close the tab, it would make sense to restore the text if I returned to that post and hit Reply again, but not if I hit reply to a different post in the same thread.
