GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida cornerback and top special teams player Deiondre Porter has been suspended indefinitely after being charged with four felonies and a misdemeanor for aggravated assault.
Porter was booked into the Alachua County jail at 11:19 a.m. Wednesday. The Gators tweeted the suspension Wednesday morning and head coach Jim McElwain addressed it on an SEC teleconference call.
"He's no longer with the football team," McElwain said. "He's suspended indefinitely for obviously a choice. It's his choice not to be with us. I'm sure you'll read about it soon enough. It's one of those things that we don't obviously condone. Like I said, it was his choice."
Alachua County court records list one charge of aggravated battery, one charge of firing a weapon into a vehicle or building and two charges of aggravated assualt with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.
The former two charges are second-degree felonies, while the latter two are third-degree felonies. Porter was also charged with property damage of less than $200, a second-degree misdemeanor.
Alachua County Jail records show that bond has not yet been set for the redshirt freshman.
A key special teams player, Porter had racked up two tackles in four games this season. Porter wore a special sombrero during the pre-game routine prior to the Tennessee game, symbolizing his importance to the team in that week's gameplan, a tradition McElwain has brought with him to Florida.
