UGA ANNOUNCES CLOSURE PLANS DUE TO IMPACT OF HURRICANE HELENE

We have been closely monitoring the development of Hurricane Helene, which continues to intensify as it rapidly approaches landfall. Forecasters warn that this dangerous storm could bring heavy rain and high winds across the state, potentially reaching unprecedented levels here in the Athens area.

Therefore, with the safety and security of our faculty, staff and students foremost in our minds, the main campus of the University of Georgia will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26 and Friday, Sept. 27.

All in-person classes, campus events and activities will be canceled during this time. Faculty members are strongly encouraged to consider alternative ways to maintain continuity of instruction at their discretion.

All UGA residence halls will remain open. For on-campus residents in University Housing, please contact your community front desk or RA with any questions or concerns. If you become aware of any facilities-related problems, please report them.

All dining halls will remain open. Campus Transit will continue normal operations until weather conditions make it unsafe to do so. Please continue to check emergency.uga.edu for updates and other safety information.

Designated Employees—employees who have been identified by their department or unit as essential to the maintenance and operations of the University—are expected to report on time unless conditions prevent safe travel. Designated Employees should contact their supervisors for additional information.

We will send an update on Friday afternoon regarding the availability of campus services over the weekend.

Faculty, staff and students at UGA’s extended campuses should follow local directions specific to their locations.

If you have not already done so, now is the time to verify your emergency contact information at ugaalert.uga.edu.

Please continue to follow UGA’s social media accounts, check your UGA email regularly and monitor emergency.uga.edu for updates.
