I was researching how Georgia was scheduled to play Texas in Austin in 1901—a game that never happened—when I came upon this crazy story I had never heard before. Involving head coach Billy Reynolds and two players, the runaway buggy incident happened four days prior to Georgia’s 1901 season opener against South Carolina.
From the October 9, 1901, edition of The Savannah Morning News:
Fwiw, Reynolds, who has been recognized as the originator of spring practice at Georgia, left the school in 1903 for the business world. He eventually became VP of the company that originally manufactured Wesson cooking oil.
As for Hill and Strickland, although there’s record of both attending school that year, I found the runaway horse & buggy incident as the final time they are associated with Georgia football.
