Saturday Update: As of now, rain is unlikely to have a major impact to your illegal tailgate activities before the Natty or your walk back to the car smoking a fat cigar after the game. Forecast models are getting into better agreement. While we could see showers early in the day Monday, I am just expecting mostly cloudy with some light drizzle and highs in the upper-50s through the afternoon. Temperatures will remain in the mid-50s at kickoff and will hold pretty steady through the game. Unfortunately, Tuesday's travel forecast home looks terrible. I would suggest moving to earlier flights if possible to avoid potentially longer delays.
More detailed... Multiple Atmospheric River events are impacting portions of California over the next few days. You have probably already seen the water rescues on the news. The stories of flooding and 3-6 feet of snow are primarily for Northern and North-Central California... well north of the LA region.
After reviewing the latest data and trends, I wanted to provide a quick update for the forecast the game.
As of now, it appears showers are likely Monday morning, before lower rain chances Monday afternoon and evening. The primary moisture plume is trending to arrive after the game Monday night and through the day Tuesday. Take note of that for your flights back east as the airports will likely be a complete mess. Expect occasional torrential rain Tuesday with sustained winds 10-20 mph and gusts near 45 mph. Not great for airports not accustomed to intense weather.
I will continue to monitor the forecast trends. I am not experienced in looking at anything related to California weather, and there are regional biases, so take that for what it's worth. The good news is your walk to the game is looking good and the forecast for the game is good... but it's covered, so of course it's good... Not necessarily. The NFL has delayed games due to lightning (see the tweet below about the construction of the stadium) and rain/wind gets in the sides at times... Let's just hope the model trends are correct (and I believe they are) and that the primary moisture plume is delayed until late Monday night. The EURO model has intense lightning potential within the leading edge of the main moisture plume... if it arrives early, it could be a problem...
