-I count 35 players. It looks like this fall will be more about earning a starting spot than a roster spot. I know Stricklin has mentioned a few times that he felt like he had too many players out there in the fall his first year. Last year we had a handful of guys on the fall roster who weren't there when the updated spring roster was released. I don't imagine that will be the case this season.
-Tony Locey is listed at 6'3 237lbs. That's one of the bigger freshman pitchers we've had in awhile....
-I don't notice any attrition from the ranks of last seasons freshmen.... There were two guys who I thought may go elsewhere, as is usually the case, but both are back.
-Neither Michael Bell nor David Gonzalez are on the roster. That's not a huge surprise, but given their departures and all of the drafted juniors also leaving, we no longer have any players on the roster who were signed by David Perno.
I haven't bought the argument in some time that "this isn't Stricklin's team." In my view, if you play every day for a coach for three years and he's the only coach you've had, you are "his guy"... But either way, the differentiation of "Perno guy (or signee) vs Stricklin guy" is now a thing of the past, officially.
-Aaron Rzucidlo and Henry Rowling are no longer on the roster. I don't think that surprises anyone greatly.
-We are young. Very young. We only have four guys on the roster who have been here for three years or more (Keegan McGovern, Mitchell Webb, Trey Logan, and Drew Moody). Of the seven players listed as juniors, only McGovern, Webb, and Logan signed here and played their first three years here). 25 of the 35 players on the roster are freshman or sophomores.
-32 of the 35 are from Georgia. Only Will Proctor (California), Trevor Tinder (Florida), and Shaefer Shepard (Florida) hail from outside the Peach State.
-17 of the 35 are listed as pitchers exclusively. Blakely Brown is still listed as an IF also, but it seems unlikely that he will see any time there. Aaron Shunk, Tucker Bradley, and Adam Sasser are also listed as two way guys.
-I thought we were getting a little too left handed hitting heavy the past couple of years, but it seems to have balanced out a little bit now, overall. Drilling deeper, it looks fairly balanced too. 1st base between Sasser and Sullivan, LJ Talley at 2nd or 3rd, Keegan McGovern in one OF spot, Tucker Maxwell and Tucker Bradley are both lefty hitters, also. So probably 4-5 lefties in the lineup.... We probably need to worry about inexperience more than right/ left, but it's interesting to look at.
-Former Dawg Jarrett Brown will serve as an undergraduate assistant this season. I always liked Jarrett a lot.... I'm sorry it didn't work out in pro ball, but glad to see he's back home.
-Hopefully we get ourselves a schedule here pretty soon....
