Lots of small women injured or killed by first generation air bags due to the speed of deployment breaking the neck. Seat belts in an 87 Toyota truck saved me in a teebone accident. Airbags still cause injuries to arms /wrist and face. Curtain airbags probably more beneficial.

Metal into your seat area would be bad no doubt. Guy ran a red light and due to his speed I actually hit him on his driver side. He was ok. Severely drunk and in a Tahoe. I didn't hit steering wheel but leg and wrist broke. 10 permanent pins in wrist and 5 in leg and no walking for 3 months.
