I always try to get the maintenance history if possible but I have a good friend that works for one of the bigger car lots in my town so I know he is shooting me straight.

The problem is without oil change receipts the only way you can tell is by pulling a valve cover. If the car hasn’t had regular oil changes the top of the cylinder will be all gunked up. At some point the oil pickup screen will become clogged and then it’s new motor time. So, i just would not buy without receipts.

If the guy selling it has to spray starter fluid in the carb to get it to crank, that usually sets off alarm bells in my head.
