Check out these videos linked below showing the packed Maryland arena student sections performing flash mob organized choreography during breaks in big games occurring in each of the past three years. I have never been in an arena with that much going on with the student sections. Simply an awesome display! Small wonder now that I've seen this that Dan McD speaks so highly of the work that Coach Mark Turgeon is doing there.
It's a reminder that college hoops experience is so much more than what happens on the court. What prospect wouldn't be tempted to play there after visiting and experiencing a display like these? I especially liked the visual effect of whole sections of the arena changing colors by bring black jackets/tops and taking them off at same time to reveal the bright yellow Terp colors of their t-shirts underneath. Seeing the whole arena dancing the Shake in synchronized fashion is also impressive.
I've seen so many college games the past two years that have been sparsely attended on several different campuses and with so little passion shown by fans that it refreshes my own energy to see that Hoops is still alive and well-attended on some campuses. Our Athletic Dept needs to send some young administrators and 6th Man students up to a Maryland game to grasp how these flash mob crowds came to be so that we can shoot towards doing something similar at the Steg next season.
Check out videos of whacky crowd explosions at U of Maryland arena.
