We posted last night what we were hearing from out Texas site about the Longhorns targeting UGA defensive coordinator Dan Lanning. We confirmed the interest was there from Sark and that he reached out. Now Dennis Dodd is reporting that Lanning interviewed earlier in the week and is the leading candidate for the Texas DC job.
I have my doubts.
We have to be clear here. In coaching circles, interviews are pretty intense, with situational questions and philosophies discussed. They are usually done in person. Of course with Covid, stuff like this can happen over the phone now, but there is still a difference between a full interview and calling someone to gauge their interest.
I am told Lanning was contacted, but did not interview in the classic sense.
Of course that can all change. Texas could put a huge offer on the table. Our sources out there say the Longhorns want a "big name." As you can see from Dave's stat article this morning that Lanning is a big name.
As it stands now, Lanning has been contacted, but has not interviewed. My opinion is that he is unlikely to go anywhere as he is maybe one year away from being a head coach somewhere.
As for Glenn Schumann, Dash heard this morning that LSU and Oregon were looking at him. We confirmed the Oregon interest in him.
As for the speculation about Will Muschamp, as we mentioned previously, we expect him to take a year off coaching. He is buying a house in Watkinsville. We expect him to take a job with Kirby Smart as an analyst and to spend time with his family as he has a son in high school and one on the Bulldogs. The speculation that he would immediately step in to replace Lanning is very premature at this point.
UPDATE: We were told earlier today that Lanning had turned down the overtures from Texas. He seems to have confirmed that on Twitter: Dan Lanning staying put despite overtures from Texas
