Georgia’s win over Alabama 34 years ago today was essentially a lone bright spot during an otherwise dismal season. Even when I asked Chuck Carswell about his fanny-saving interception, he seemed more focused on how disappointing he and the team performed in 1990.
Still, it was a memorable win over the Crimson Tide.
Quarterback Preston Jones, who had been benched because of his sub-par play through two games, came off the bench to lead Georgia on two fourth-quarter scoring drives after trailing 16-6. The last drive ended with a 40-yard field goal by John Kasay, giving the Bulldogs a 17-16 lead with 1:31 remaining.
It was a come-from-behind, upset win for Georgia in a game the Bulldogs probably had no business winning… Look at the stats. Besides Jones’ heroics, tailbacks Garrison Hearst and Larry Ware were their only offense. And a former AD led the team in receiving.
