For a couple of decades, playing Kentucky at night in Lexington was once an every-other-year ritual for Georgia. And perhaps there’s not a more notable game between the Bulldogs and Wildcats from this era than their meeting in 1978.
The Bulldogs, which entered as four-point favorites, had clawed their way back from a 16-0 deficit to trail by one point with eight seconds remaining.
It had not been a good night for the placekickers in Lexington. Kentucky’s Tom Griggs missed a third-quarter PAT, which would have extended the Wildcats’ lead to 17-0, and a fourth-quarter field-goal try, as well. Before his game-winning attempt, Robinson had missed two field goals, or what would be his only two missed attempts the entire season (15 of 17 for regular season).
“I gave the situation over to the Lord,” Robinson told the media following the game about what went through his mind before the kick. “Whether I made it, or missed it, it was going to be His will.”
Lord willing, Robinson kicked the “whatchamacallit out of it,” and Georgia prevailed.
A cool side note about '78 Georgia-Kentucky according to @louphil from a couple of years ago: On the Monday morning following the game, WSB received a phone call from a station manager in Louisiana who had listened to the game. He requested a copy of Munson’s broadcast be given to the LSU Journalism School so their students could listen to it how to call a football game.
