50 Years Ago: Boots on the Ground in Vietnam

On March 8, 1965 (50 years ago this Sunday), the first U.S. combat troops came ashore near Da Nang, South Vietnam. No one could have foreseen that the 3,500 marines who landed that day would eventually be followed by over 2.5 million American soldiers.

Ho Chi Min came to the US first seeking help in the independence of...

Vietnam after WW2. The French had been run out of Vietnam by the Japanese and Ho was a nationalist who wanted independence for Vietnam, no matter what it took. The US refused to help and backed the French in reestablishing the colony of French Indochina, so Ho turned to the Russians and the Chinese communists for help, which they gladly gave. The rest, as they say, is history.

Ironically, the Vietnamese and Chinese are historic enemies and as soon as the war with the US was over, China invaded Vietnam. The Vietnamese beat the Chinese back and the Chinese have never attacked again.
