Questions we received and the responses from Trent and I:
Q: Any big-timers from 23 class expected to Visit Athens this weekend?
A: It's not an ideal weekend for it as Georgia will be immediately getting to work on LSU and the SEC Championship when the Tech game is over. Will be mostly underclassmen (UPDATE for you guys: there is one DL that is committed elsewhere that we are hearing is entertaining a visit. Don't want to put his name out until the visit is confirmed, but just know Tray Scott is putting in some work on a flip here.)
Q: What are we hearing on flips? Would people be pushed out of the class if
A: It's more likely that you see current Georgia players be pushed toward the portal than it would be for Georgia to push a player out of this class. Kirby and company are trying to make sure they maintain excellent relationships with high school coaches and staffs. HS recruiting and the development of players who are the right fit will always be the lifeblood and calling card of the Kirby Smart program and is a reason that Georgia is thriving right now, while some programs are taking a step back.
Q: How do we think Georgia finishes the class?
A: Georgia is in great shape with Samuel M'Pemba (committing Dec. 4) and Jordan Hall. Georgia is in a head-to-head battle with Ohio State for Damon Wilson. That could end up being the same scenario for Matayo Uiagalelei. Nyckoles Harbor is being recruited by Georgia as a tight end now and will taking an official visit Dec. 16-18. Georgia is a legitimate threat to flip Anthony Evans and Justice Haynes. Georgia is in the mix with Duce Robinson, and the Harbor development does not impact that. At this point, Georgia is much further along with Robinson than they are Harbor. A Georgia/USC battle for Robinson, it seems. Kirby is going to land his fair share of these targets/flips. Believe that Georgia is going to end up with a top 2 class.
Q: How many recruits does Georgia get in this class? Which recruit will be the biggest surprise addition?
A: Trent and I set the over/under on just High School guys at 27.5. Including Portal, we'd bump that up to around 29.5. Since Haynes or Evans flipping wouldn't really be huge surprises if they indeed happen, we think it'd likely be a big name defensive lineman or a cornerback added late. Possible one that nobody seems coming.
General Notes:
I am about as high on Gwinnett County recruits and their chances of ending up at UGA as @DonutDawg is. However, if I had to put some money down on it today, I'd say that curse is broken in a big way in the 2024 class. Would be surprised to see some 2023 movement there as well.
Dec. 1 - 15 is going to be very interesting. Logic would tell you that Georgia making another run at a National Championship would prevent depth guys from testing the portal waters. However, there are two sides to every coin and despite the elimination of the initial counter rule, you still have to stay under 85 scholarships. Have to create spots to have spots in the roster management of today's time. Don't be surprised if a few UGA guys enter the portal. Georgia will certainly be looking for a few key pieces as well.
