Back when Tom Brady ran the scout team for New England, the coaching staff noticed what would become his defining trait as a QB: he always moved the chains.

Everyone gushes about the lasers Beck throws on those intermediate passes. And he has underrated athleticism and really moves well in the pocket. He looks and throws like a pro QB.

But if you ask me why he's killing it, more than anything else, it's because the guy moves the chains. All the time. He rarely runs just to run, he runs for first downs. When we're in second and long, he makes throws that are either first downs or ones that get us in a position to make a first down. He makes the plays we need to move the chains.

Could he take a few more vertical shots deep? Sure, but even those come at the expense of taking sure things which . . . move the chains.

Elite QBs move the chains. Their teammates on offense know they'll maintain possession, and the defense on the other side dread it because they know it, too.

We have an elite QB.
